Zwartberg

The city of Genk approached us to produce a permanent installation video about art park Labiomista and the neighborhood Zwartberg in Genk. The installation is permanently on show in the park to educate visitors about the rich history of the old Limburg mining site, the former Limburg Zoo and the current art park Labiomista. It is a story about renewal, coexistence and the power of multiculturalism.

Koen Vanmechelen placed his art park Labiomista in Zwartberg with a reason. Instead of settling in a metropolis where the artistic jet set dwells, he chose Genk as his home base. Not a metropolis, but an ordinary place with a rich history. The provincial town, once the economic engine of a country with an industrial mining industry, lost its status when the mines closed. What remained was the unique cultural diversity of its inhabitants and a strong social cohesion.
